Mail from here is about space, which has quietly become an industrial supply chain rather than a series of events. Launch cadence, the cost per kilogram to orbit, satellite manufacture at volume, and the ground infrastructure nobody photographs. The interesting question is which parts of it are businesses and which are still programmes.

The distinction matters more than the launches do. A programme survives on appropriations and ends when they stop; a business has customers who would buy the service anyway, and the two are priced very differently once you can tell them apart.

The tell is usually the customer list. One name paying most of the bill is a programme wearing a business suit, whatever the revenue line says.

Second and third customers are the milestone worth waiting for.
